India's 14.7%: Piramal's Quarterly EBITDA Jumps 72% as the Lowest Rung of the Global Margin Ladder Starts to Climb

Piramal Pharma reported Q2 FY27 (July-September 2026): revenue of INR 26.17B, up 28%; CDMO revenue INR 14.24B, up 36%; EBITDA INR 3.85B, up 72%, margin 14.7% (+370bp); the quarter swung to a net profit. In the first half it added 22 new customers, hosted 110 customer audits and 12 regulatory inspections with zero FDA OAI classifications. Phase III molecules rose from 25 to 28; ADC revenue grew 51%. Full-year guidance was raised to 19-20% growth.

India has long occupied the bottom rung of the global CDMO margin ladder. On 28 October 2026, Piramal Pharma provided evidence that the rung is rising.

Per the company's release, Q2 FY27 revenue was INR 26.17B, up 28% year on year; EBITDA INR 3.85B, up 72%, with margin at 14.7% against 11.0% a year earlier, a 370bp gain; profit after tax INR 0.05B versus a loss of INR 0.99B, a swing to profit. First-half revenue was INR 48.87B, up 23%, EBITDA INR 6.69B, up 72%, margin 13.7% against 9.8%, and the net loss narrowed to INR 0.64B.

CDMO is the only engine

By segment: CDMO delivered INR 14.24B in the quarter, up 36%, and INR 26.11B in the half, up 28%; contract inhalation (CHG) INR 8.49B, up 32%, and INR 15.92B, up 24%; consumer healthcare INR 3.59B, up 13%. All three grew, but only CDMO showed accelerating double-digit growth, and the margin improvement came mainly from higher capacity utilisation and operating leverage.

The order-side signals are more specific: 22 new customers added in the half, 110 customer audits and 12 regulatory inspections hosted, and a continued record of zero Official Action Indicated classifications in US FDA inspections. Phase III molecules rose from 25 at end-March 2026 to 28; innovation-related revenue grew 24% and on-patent commercial manufacturing revenue grew 39%. ADC services revenue rose 51% year on year in the half.

Capabilities are being filled in. The company closed a controlling stake in Yapan Bio to strengthen biologics, and the Lexington expansion remains on track to add sterile fill-finish and complete an integrated ADC offering, with a new microbiology laboratory already commissioned on site. On the strength of the half, FY27 revenue growth guidance was raised to 19-20% with meaningfully higher profitability expected.

Four companies on one margin table

Set the 2026 third-quarter numbers side by side and the global margin gradient is unmistakable. Samsung Biologics posted a 42.9% operating margin, down sharply from 50.4% a year earlier on Plant 5 ramp and the first consolidated quarter from Rockville. Lonza guides FY2026 core EBITDA margin of 33-34% with a mid-term ambition in the high thirties. WuXi AppTec reported a 40.4% adjusted non-IFRS net margin for the nine months, up 8.3 points. Asymchem's nine-month gross margin was 41.88%. Piramal's 14.7% is the floor of that curve.

But the floor has the steepest slope. Samsung's 42.9% fell from 50.4%; Lonza's 33-34% was nudged up modestly within a year; WuXi AppTec's 40.4% reflects scale plus a richer late-stage mix. Piramal went from 11.0% to 14.7% - a third higher in twelve months. In low-base recovery, elasticity looks better than the absolute level.

A caveat on definitions: Samsung's 42.9% is an operating margin, Lonza's 33-34% a core EBITDA margin, Piramal's 14.7% an EBITDA margin. They are not strictly comparable. But a gap of more than 15 points is enough to show that scale and modality set the ceiling. Piramal has no 700-tonne small-molecule reactor train and no 780,000-litre antibody footprint; its mix of small-molecule API, inhalation, ADC and biologics carries a structurally lower ceiling.

Editor's read: the real beneficiary of China plus one

First, India's CDMO positioning is shifting from cost substitution to compliance substitution. The 110 customer audits, 12 regulatory inspections and zero OAI are the most sellable numbers in this release - in a world of regionalised supply chains, audit pass rates have become a leading indicator for order allocation rather than a lagging one.

Second, the growth mix shows ADC is not a leaders-only game. ADC revenue up 51% and Phase III molecules from 25 to 28 are not large numbers, but the direction is clear: a mid-sized CDMO can enter ADC on a one-stop-but-not-largest basis, bolting sterile fill-finish at Lexington onto conjugation capability rather than competing on scale.

Third, for Chinese CDMOs the location of price competition will move. Chinese firms have historically won global orders against Indian quotes; if Indian leaders lift margins from 11% to above 15%, they gain both room to keep cutting price and cash flow to invest in new capability. Competition in the second tier will happen between China and India before it happens among the leaders.

One note on reading guidance. Piramal raised full-year growth to 19-20% and noted that the second half is typically stronger than the first - the credibility of such guidance rests on backlog, not management language. This time the company disclosed customer and audit counts but not a backlog figure, which is the question to press next quarter.
