Samsung Biologics Crosses $22B Cumulative Order Barrier; 845,000 L Capacity Leads the World
A new KRW 93.48 billion European contract pushed Samsung Biologics' cumulative order total (on an MTOP basis) past $22 billion (~KRW 29.9 trillion). Its 845,000 L total capacity leads Switzerland's Lonza (~741,000 L) and China's WuXi Biologics (~305,000 L).
On 2 October 2026, Samsung Biologics signed a KRW 93.47862 billion (about $68.8 million) manufacturing contract with a European pharmaceutical company, running through 31 December 2031. Measured by the minimum take-or-pay (MTOP) guarantee, cumulative orders reached $22.01975 billion (~KRW 29.938 trillion), crossing the $22 billion threshold for the first time.
The milestone traces back to Samsung Biologics' first commercial production contract with Bristol Myers Squibb in July 2013, when it was an unproven new plant. Thirteen years later, the 15-year-old company has become the world's largest biomanufacturing-capacity holder. Long-term contracts with legally guaranteed MTOP provisions lock in revenue visibility: after subtracting $11.77 billion already delivered by H1-end, the remaining backlog stands at around $10 billion — roughly three times last year's annual sales of KRW 4.5569 trillion.
Capacity is the decisive edge. From Plant 1's modest 30,000 L at BMS-contract time, Samsung Biologics successively completed Plants 2–5 (155,000 / 180,000 / 240,000 / 180,000 L) and, with the March 2026 acquisition of the Rockville, Maryland site (60,000 L), reached total capacity of 845,000 L. On the same basis, Switzerland's Lonza stands at ~741,000 L, China's WuXi Biologics at ~305,000 L and Japan's Fujifilm Diosynth at ~260,000 L — widening Samsung's lead over the No. 2 player by more than 100,000 L.
Existing big-pharma clients keep expanding commitments: one European client's contract was raised from KRW 279.6 billion to KRW 400.7 billion this year, a virtuous 'small first, then scale up' cycle. The Rockville US site enables nearby supply for clients reshoring production, while the proposed PolyPeptide Group acquisition and Bio Campus II expansion extend its portfolio across antibodies, ADCs and peptides.
